Full Submissions Guidelines

Please read guidelines in full before submitting. Submissions which don't adhere to guidelines will result in authors not be considered for current or future issues.

Formating and length

Stories should be between 2000 - 6000 words in length. Please send only RTF, DOC or DOCX files and stick to standard manuscript format as much as possible. Please do not include identifying information in your manuscript.

Genre

We accept Science-fiction. Short stories in which were the science/technology element removed the plot would not function.

 

We accept and encourage Science-Crossover genres.

Simultaneous submissions, reprints and multiple submissions

Sci-Fi Ireland accepts simultaneous submissions but asks that authors inform us if their work is accepted elsewhere.

We do not accept resubmissions/reprints. We’re looking for original work emerging from Ireland.

We do not accept multiple submissions from the same author for any given issue. We ask you send us your best work and if you don’t feel the desire to do so then we’re not the right magazine for you.

Languages and translations

Sci-Fi Ireland accepts and publishes work in Irish and English.

 

Submissions accepted in Irish will have their story published bilingually and be expected to work with our translations editor.

 

Submissions e in English will be published exclusively in English.

Editing

All accepted manuscripts will be line-edited for grammar, punctuation, and clarity. The author will have the opportunity to review and discuss all of these edits.

 

Stories may occasionally be accepted provisionally on condition of structural edits and this will be communicated clearly under such circumstances.

Payment and publicity

For open submissions payment is £75 per short story regardless of length. Payment will be made via bank transfer within 7 days of the story being published by Sci-Fi Ireland.

 

Sci-Fi Ireland also commits to supporting our author's stories through social media and to nominate/support nomination of stories for awards and anthologies.

 

We will also do our best to promote stories and authors at conventions but cannot guarantee the nature of when, where or how often.

RIGHTS

Sci-Fi Ireland claims first world electronic rights, and first print rights. After publication all rights revert to the author.

 

(In the case of anthology publication we will contact authors to discuss non-exclusive anthology rights.) 

 

This means you can’t publish that story as a first-run or “new” story anywhere else in the world, and you can’t have it appear anywhere else, in print or online, before or for 180 days after we publish it.

All rights are restricted to English and Irish language unless specifically stated otherwise.

AI policy

We will not consider any submissions translated, written, developed, or assisted by AI or LLM tools. Stories will be put though an AI and plagiarism detection programme and attempting to submit these works will result in being banned from submitting to us the future.

 

Sci-Fi Ireland commits to treating all work submitted and published as confidential material and for evaluation/publications purposes only. They will not be used to train “AI” tools of any kind.

Responses and acceptances

Sci-Fi Ireland reads all submitted stories and responds to authors within 5 weeks of submissions closing.

Confidentiality

An author’s personal information (name, address, email, phone, or secret identity) will not be shared with anyone outside our editorial staff, except in the following situations:

  • if we are compelled by law

  • if threats are made against our staff by the author

  • if the author has instructed us to do so

  • if the work submitted is determined to be plagiarized or otherwise not your own work

How to Submit

Please submit work as an attachment to our email: sci.fi.ireland.submissions@gmail.com

 

Include a cover letter in the body of the email containing – Name, story title, word count and, brief writer's bio.

 

Your bio should also include your place of birth and where you’re based.
